You stay loosely in touch with lots of people, and across what they are doing. One day, you need to know something and you remember that someone you vaguely know was thinking about it a few weeks ago. You contact them, they give you the gen. It gives us access to the best possible search engine - the carbon based lifeforms - often people we don't know as well.
