My latest column for Guardian Online is up. It’s headlined Secret of their success and it’s about weblogs and the uniquely conversational tone of really good bloggers.

In which I try, after 25 years of blogging, to drop my ironic stance a bit.

Saw your column on the Guardian website, Steve. As a member of LiveJournal.com I used to enjoy reading a few of the blogs and met some interesting people who I now tend to chat to using instant messenger software.
However, good as many of the blogs were, I never saw anyone getting thousands of responses, as you mention. Anything over thirty seemed a good number.
I was hoping you might have included links to some of these super-blogs (after all, what’s a few thousand Guardian readers going to hurt?). But you didn’t. Guess that must be an example of the open-endedness you were talking about.
